Tragedy Strikes in York County: Three Officers Killed in Pennsylvania Shooting
On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, a devastating incident occurred in North Codorus Township, Pennsylvania, resulting in the deaths of three police officers and injuries to two others. The officers were ambushed while serving a warrant on 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth, who was suspected of stalking his ex-girlfriend.
According to state police, Ruth opened fire with an AR-15-style rifle as the officers attempted to enter the residence. Detective Sergeant Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser, all from the Northern York County Regional Police Department, were fatally shot during the attack. Two other officers—one detective and a sheriff’s deputy—were critically injured but are expected to survive. Ruth was fatally shot during the ensuing gunfight.
The tragic event has drawn national attention and prompted an outpouring of support for the fallen officers and their families. Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the officers' service and sacrifice. The incident has also reignited discussions about the dangers law enforcement officers face, particularly when responding to domestic violence situations.
This attack is one of the deadliest in recent Pennsylvania law enforcement history and underscores the risks officers encounter daily while serving their communities.
